Portsmouth FC have secured the signing of South African midfielder Luke Leโ€ฏRoux from Swedish side IFK Vรคrnamo. The 25-year-old joins on a threeโ€‘year contract for an undisclosed fee.

Le Roux came through the SuperSport United ranks before moving to Sweden to feature for Varbergs. He then spent a season playing in the Dutch top-flight with Volendam and joined IFK Vรคrnamo last season, where he helped them win a play-off to remain in the highest tier of Swedish football and made a total of 32 appearances for the club. Internationally, he has represented Bafana Bafana since 2022 and has several caps for South Africa.

His arrival is particularly notable as he is the first South African to play for Portsmouth since Aaron Mokoena, the former Bafana Bafana captain who joined Pompey in May 2009 from Blackburn Rovers. Mokoena made 70 appearances in all competitions for Portsmouth, including 23 Premier League matches.

โ€œLukeโ€™s form over the past couple of seasons means he not only found himself on our radar, but also that of a number of other clubs.

So weโ€™re delighted that heโ€™s agreed to join Pompey and weโ€™ve brought in an experienced international player.Luke is a holding midfielder who likes to sit in and dictate the play. Heโ€™s physically strong and can also handle the ball.

It was a position we were looking to fill and is just what we needed. Iโ€™m excited to see him in action in a Pompey shirt.โ€ – John Mousinho, Portsmouth Head Coach
