Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs have both advanced to the next round of the CAF Interclub Competitions, keeping Soweto’s hopes alive on the continental stage.

Orlando Pirates delivered a commanding performance to cruise past Lesotho’s Lioli FC with a 4-0 win at Orlando Stadium, sealing a comprehensive 7-0 aggregate victory. The Sea Robbers were led by two braces, one from Tshepang Moremi and another from super-sub Yanela Mbuthuma, as Lioli failed to mount any resistance.

Kaizer Chiefs, on the other hand, had to dig deep to secure their spot. After losing the first leg 1-0 away to Angola’s Kabuscorp, Amakhosi leveled the tie in the return leg at FNB Stadium through an early goal from Lilepo. With no further goals in regulation time, the match went to penalties. Chiefs held their nerve and converted all five of their spot-kicks, with Sirino, Tshabalala, Cele, Silva, and McCarthy all scoring to seal a 5-4 shootout win.

Both Soweto giants now move on to the second round of the CAF competitions, flying the South African flag high on the continent.
