Mpheni Defenders are closing in on yet another Stream A title in the ABC Motsepe League Limpopo division, needing just nine points from their remaining six matches to secure top spot once again.
After 16 matches, Mpheni sit comfortably at the summit with 40 points, having recorded 12 wins and four draws while remaining unbeaten throughout the campaign. They have scored 30 goals and conceded only six, giving them a commanding +24 goal difference and the best defensive record in the stream.
Their closest challengers, Tzaneen United, are second with 32 points from 16 matches after registering 10 wins, two draws and four defeats. With only six fixtures left in the campaign, Mpheni now require just three more victories to mathematically wrap up the Stream A title.
Mukondeni Young Chiefs occupy third place with 28 points, while The Dolphins sit fourth on 25 points with two games in hand. Vondwe XI Bullets complete the top five with 23 points after 16 matches.
Mpheni’s run-in, however, will not be without challenges. Their final six fixtures include several matches against teams currently sitting in the top half of the table.
They begin the final stretch away to Selwana White Vultures on Saturday, 21 March, before hosting Tzaneen United on Saturday, 28 March in what could prove to be the decisive match in the title race. A victory in that encounter would all but confirm Mpheni as Stream A champions once again.
The schedule continues with a trip to The Dolphins on Friday, 3 April, followed by a home clash against Mukondeni Young Chiefs on Saturday, 11 April, another fixture that could have major implications at the top of the table.
Mpheni will then travel to face Baduzah Celtics on Saturday, 18 April, before wrapping up their league campaign away to Musina United on Saturday, 25 April.
For now, the equation remains simple for the unbeaten leaders, three wins from their final six matches, and Mpheni Defenders will once again be crowned Stream A champions.
