After a seven-year absence, Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Women are set to make their long-awaited return to the Varsity Football tournament when the 2026 campaign gets underway on Friday, 7 August.

The Eastern Cape outfit secured qualification after an impressive showing at the USSA Football Championships, earning their place among the country’s top university teams for the first time since their last appearance in 2018.

Head coach Buyisile Khunou believes qualifying for the competition has injected fresh confidence into the squad while underlining the university’s continued investment in the growth of women’s football.

It felt so good and exciting. Qualifying acts as a motivation for the team and is a positive reflection on the university’s commitment to women’s sport, said Khunou.

WSU’s preparations have extended beyond tactical and technical training, with the coaching staff placing significant emphasis on strengthening team unity and ensuring the players are mentally equipped for the tournament.

We’ve focused on team-building sessions to reduce anxiety while promoting teamwork, discipline and a die-hard attitude,” Khunou explained.

He added that competing in Varsity Football presents an important opportunity for both the players and the institution.

It means a lot to the players because of the exposure they will receive, and for the university it reflects the opportunities and development of our women’s football programme.

On the field, Khunou expects his side to adopt a composed, possession-based approach.

Our strategy is simple. We want to play open football with patient build-ups,” he said.

Captain Okuhle “Hotto” Mrulwa will lead WSU in their return to the national stage, while midfielder Lilitha Mjungula has been identified as one of the players to watch during the campaign.

WSU begin their 2026 Varsity Football campaign against Wits Women at 13:00 on Friday, 7 August, at Tuks Stadium, where they will be aiming to mark their return with a positive result.
