UL suffers fourth consecutive defeat in 2026 Varsity football

The University of Limpopo (UL) has suffered their fourth consecutive defeat at the hands of reigning champions the University of Free State (UFS) in the 2026 Varsity football.

UL had a brilliant start in the first half as they managed to break the deadlock on the 9^th minute through Maano Phaswana who headed home a delightful cross from Theto Mohale to register UL’s first goal of the 2026 campaign.

The University of Limpopo had couple of chances to take a comfortable but failed to convert their one-on-one chances as they took a slim lead to the interval.

UL lack of composure in front of goals proved costly in the second half as the University of Free State (UFS) had an immediate response with captain Jerome Jansen restoring parity on the 47^th minute to silence the home crowd.

UL responded by introducing Kagiso Shokane to replace the misfiring Gift Mogale who could not capitalize on his through on goal opportunities in the first half.

This move almost paid dividends in the 74^th minute with Kagiso Shokane through on a goal but denied by the upright after beating UFS keeper Lethukuhle Makhanya.

The university of Free State (UFS) launched a swift counter attack after UL come close to restoring its lead.

This swift counter was finished by Ben Kraai powerful drilled shot to the bottom right conner to complete UFS comeback.

The reigning champions (UFS) showed a composed defensive discipline to see out a 2-1 comeback victory away in Limpopo to keep their playoffs chances alive with their first win of the campaign after suffering three defeats in their opening three matches.

Meanwhile, the University of Limpopo (UL) woes deepen after registering their fourth consecutive defeat in the 2026 Varsity football and remains winless and yet to register a point in the campaign.
