The University of Limpopo (UL) are knocked out of the ongoing 2026 Varsity Football after being held to a 1-1 by the University of Western Cape (UWC) at UWC Stadium.
The Limpopo-based outfit strike first on the 7th minute through Fesbon Ngobeni who found the back of the net with a well taken volley from the edge of the box to the top corner to hand Turfies advantage going into the break.
UL showed defensive discipline at the back as they kept the University of the Western Cape at bay for a major part of the encounter. With goalkeeper Wisani Sibuyi pivotal in the solid display shown by the University of Limpopo.
UWC were later awarded a controversial penalty on the 88th minute after Plaatjies was adjudged to be fouled in the box.
Luphulo Zini who came-off the bench stepped up and calmly slotted the penalty home to restore parity and see both sides share spoils.
This stalemate sees the University of Limpopo bow out of the 2026 Varsity Football with two games to spare after picking just one point out of five matches.
Meanwhile, The University of Western Cape maintains their unbeaten record in the campaign and look set to progress to the semi-finals of the 2026 Varsity Football.
Malwanda Makamu who was named FNB Player of the match believes his side will make history in the remaining two games by securing their first-ever win in the Varsity Football tournament.
We continue to fight on, I’m positive that in the last two games we are going to create history for the institution. We going to get the first win-ever.” Makamu told SuperSport.
UL will turn its attention to prepare to face the University of Pretoria (Tuks) on Friday 11 September at Tuks Stadium, before hosting TUT in the following week at Oscar Mpetha Stadium as they look to bow out of the tournament in style.
