Kaizer Chiefs defender Thabo Moloisane is confident he will return to the Bafana Bafana set-up, insisting he is working his way back to his best after a difficult season last term.

Moloisane was speaking ahead of Amakhosi’s Betway Premiership clash against his former club Stellenbosch FC on Tuesday, where he will have an opportunity to continue building on his performances since joining the Soweto giants.

I’ve been in the Bafana set-up before. I know what it takes. I had a bit of a tricky season last season, but I’m definitely sure I’m well on my way to getting back to my best. Mark my words, I’ll be back in Bafana soon,” he said.

The defender acknowledged the competition for places in the national team but believes playing for a high-profile club such as Chiefs will keep him in the spotlight.

Moloisane also reflected on his transition to Naturena, describing it as seamless despite not featuring in the team’s opening matches. He said the time spent on the bench allowed him to learn from his teammates while continuing to work towards earning his place.

There’s no such thing as a jersey being heavy. For me, it’s just to continue working hard. I was chosen because I deserve to be here. I was chosen because I’m capable,” he said.

The Soweto-born defender has a particularly strong connection with Amakhosi, having grown up near the club’s headquarters in Naturena. He recalled fetching tickets at the club as a young boy and said he now hopes to play a role in restoring its former glory.

For me, it’s just to come and write my own history at this club, to bring back the glory days and for my name to be counted among the guys who brought back the glory days and made the supporters happy,” he said.

Despite Chiefs remaining unbeaten, Moloisane acknowledged that the team needs to turn draws into victories. He also highlighted the importance of improving defensively after conceding goals in recent matches.

The defender said the team used the FIFA international break to work on its defensive shortcomings and prepare for the next phase of the season.

He credited head coach Fernando da Cruz and the technical team for the system implemented at the club, adding that the players were working hard to adapt and deliver the results expected by the supporters.

Tuesday’s encounter against Stellenbosch will also carry personal significance for Moloisane, who expressed gratitude to his former club for the role it played in his career.

It’s only fair to start by giving gratitude to the club for the role they played in my career, to get me to where I am. But I’m also grateful for the opportunity to represent such a big club,” he said.

Moloisane expects an emotional reunion but is looking forward to the challenge as Chiefs seek to return to winning ways and maintain their progress in the league.
