Harry Kane

Harry Kane has been crowned the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner after an outstanding season with Bayern Munich and England, becoming the first Englishman to claim football’s most prestigious individual award since Michael Owen in 2001.

The Bayern Munich striker beat Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal to the honour at a ceremony in London, capping a remarkable journey from the challenges of his early career to the top of world football.

Kane enjoyed a prolific campaign, scoring 61 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions as Bayern secured a domestic league and cup double. He also played a key role in England’s run to the FIFA World Cup semi-finals, finishing the tournament with six goals.

Speaking after receiving the award from Brazilian football legend Ronaldo, Kane described the moment as beyond his wildest dreams.

Wow, I’m almost speechless,” he said, expressing his gratitude to France Football and reflecting on the significance of winning the award in London.

The England captain also thanked Bayern Munich, his former club Tottenham Hotspur and his international teammates for their contributions to his success.

Kane acknowledged that his rise to the top had not been straightforward, recalling the loan spells and setbacks he experienced before establishing himself among the game’s leading strikers.

“For any young boy or girl who wants to achieve their dream, anything is possible,” he said, hoping his journey would inspire the next generation of footballers.

He also recognised the role played by his teammates, highlighting the importance of the players who create opportunities and help him perform at his best.

Although the Ballon d’Or recognises individual excellence, Kane was quick to stress that the achievement would not have been possible without the support of those around him at club and international level.

The ceremony was not without controversy, however, as the Ballon d’Or website published three separate articles naming Kane, Mbappé and Yamal as the winner of the men’s award just hours before the event, creating confusion ahead of the announcement.

Despite the pre-ceremony confusion, Kane ultimately emerged as the winner, bringing an end to England’s 25-year wait for another men’s Ballon d’Or recipient.
