South Africa’s Banyana Banyana faced Nigeria’s Super Falcons in the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 Semifinal in what was a dramatic and hard-fought match as Nigeria crash South Africa’s dream of being back to back champions.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons came out with a strong offensive approach from the onset, pressing for an opener. However, Banyana Banyana remained solid at the back, with goalkeeper Andile Dlamini pulling off several key saves.

The turning point came when Bambanani Mbane was penalised for a handball in the box, handing Nigeria a penalty. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade stepped up to take it and calmly converted, giving Nigeria a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The second half saw Banyana Banyana respond quickly. In the 50th minute, Hildah Magaia was fouled inside the box, earning South Africa a penalty. Linda Motlhalo kept her composure and converted the spot kick to level the score at 1-1.

The match continued to be highly competitive, with South Africa pushing for a winner. Noxolo Cesane came close with a shot that was cleared off the line, creating a tense moment that had everyone on the edge of their seats.

However, in the 83rd minute, the game took a heartbreaking turn. Gabriela Salgado suffered what appeared to be a serious injury, causing both South African and Nigerian players to react with shock and horror. The sight of Salgado in distress left players in tears, as the match was momentarily paused.

Once play resumed, Nigeria quickly capitalised on the momentum. Uchenna Kanu scored the winning goal, securing a 2-1 victory for Nigeria and ending Banyana Banyana’s hopes of back-to-back titles.

South Africa will now face Ghana on Friday, July 25th, in the third-place playoff, while Nigeria will meet the hosts, Morocco, in the final on Saturday, July 26th.
