Cape Town City and Magesi FC shared the spoils in an entertaining 1-1 Promotion/Relegation Play-Off clash on Wednesday afternoon.

City started brightly and created the first meaningful chance of the match in the 8th minute when Therlo Moosa found space inside the box, but his effort could only find the side netting.

The hosts continued to apply pressure, forcing corner kicks in the 13th and 19th minutes, but were unable to capitalise on either opportunity.

Moosa remained at the heart of City’s attacking play and nearly opened the scoring in spectacular fashion in the 22nd minute, attempting a bicycle kick that was comfortably gathered by Elvis Chipezeze.

Magesi gradually grew into the contest. Luthuli tested the City defence in the 29th minute before Vandala tried his luck from range a minute later, with both efforts going wide. City goalkeeper Luca then produced two consecutive saves in the 31st minute to keep the visitors at bay.

The Limpopo outfit squandered a clear opportunity in the 41st minute, and they were made to pay shortly afterwards.

In the 42nd minute, Bokang Telile delivered a dangerous ball across the face of goal and Therlo Moosa arrived at the perfect moment to tap home and give Cape Town City a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

Magesi responded immediately after the restart. Just three minutes into the second half, Vandala rounded both the goalkeeper and the last defender before calmly finishing to level matters at 1-1.

The visitors looked dangerous on the counter-attack and Vandala continued to trouble City’s defence, although he was flagged offside in the 57th minute.

Cape Town City searched for a winner and came close through Sereetsi, whose effort drifted wide in the 54th minute, while Amato’s long-range strike narrowly missed the target four minutes later.

The hosts introduced fresh legs throughout the second half, bringing on Prins Tjiueza, followed by double substitutions involving Keagan Dolly, Zinganto, Momalake and Ngobeni.

Despite the changes, Chipezeze stood firm in the Magesi goal, producing an excellent save in the 61st minute and denying City on several occasions late in the match.

Magesi also refreshed their side, introducing Raphadu in the 81st minute and Buthelezi four minutes later as they looked to secure a valuable point.

With eight minutes added on, the drama continued until the final whistle. In the seventh minute of stoppage time, Heaven Sereetsi came agonisingly close to restoring City’s lead when his effort crashed against the crossbar. Moments later, Ngobeni tested Chipezeze again, but the experienced goalkeeper was equal to the task.

The match ended 1-1, with both sides taking a point from a fiercely contested play-off battle.

The draw officially ends Cape Town City’s hopes of survival, confirming their relegation.

Attention now shifts to Saturday’s decisive clash between Milford FC and Magesi FC, with promotion to the top flight on the line.
