Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns renew their fierce rivalry tomorrow in a blockbuster Betway Premiership encounter at FNB Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 15h00.
Betway will add extra excitement to the occasion, with R30,000 up for grabs for the best-dressed fan who holds a registered Betway account, while the chosen winner will receive R10,000 if they are not a registered account holder.
Chiefs face a formidable challenge against Sundowns, having gone 10 league meetings without a victory. The Amakhosi have suffered seven defeats and recorded three draws during that run, with their last league triumph coming in a 2-1 victory at Loftus Versfeld in 2021. Sundowns have also dominated the scoring during that period, finding the net 19 times compared to Chiefs’ five.
Across all competitions, Chiefs have managed just one victory in their last 15 meetings with the Brazilians. Sundowns have won nine of those encounters, while five ended in draws. Chiefs’ solitary victory came in the 2025 Nedbank Cup semi-final, a result that proved crucial as they went on to lift the trophy.
Historically, however, the rivalry remains closely contested. There have been 114 meetings between the two sides in all competitions since the formation of the NSL, with Chiefs recording 42 victories to Sundowns’ 38, while 34 matches have ended in draws. Chiefs have scored 128 goals compared to Sundowns’ 126.
Interestingly, Sundowns have failed to beat Chiefs in their last three encounters, with one defeat and two draws. Both league meetings last season ended in stalemates, results that contributed to Sundowns surrendering their grip on the Betway Premiership title, which was ultimately won by Orlando Pirates.
For newly appointed Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz, a victory over the reigning giants would provide a major boost and could prove an early statement of intent.
With history, rivalry and league ambitions all at stake, FNB Stadium is set for a compelling encounter when Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns kicks off at 15h00.
