The race for promotion in the ABC Motsepe League Limpopo streams is heating up, and as clubs enter the second round of the season, one side continues to set the pace, Mpheni Defenders.

The Stream A leaders remain the only unbeaten team across both Limpopo streams. After 13 matches, they have registered nine wins and four draws, amassing 31 points without suffering a single defeat.

Their numbers underline their authority. With 22 goals scored and just six conceded, Mpheni boast the best defensive record in their stream and a healthy goal difference of +16. Defensive discipline and efficiency in front of goal have been the pillars of their campaign so far.

However, what truly sets Mpheni apart is the experience within their squad.

The team is packed with seasoned campaigners who have previously played professional football, bringing leadership, composure and tactical intelligence to the dressing room. That experience has been evident in tight matches, where game management and mental strength have secured valuable points.

At the start of the season, Mpheni added further quality with the signing of midfielder Meshack Maphangule, formerly of Black Leopards, Orlando Pirates and Chippa United.

January reinforcements further strengthened the squad. Defender Kenneth Nthatheni, who previously featured for the Orlando Pirates DDC side, Polokwane City, Black Leopards, Venda Football Club and Marumo Gallants, added depth at the back. Striker Mehluleli Maphumulo, another former Orlando Pirates DDC product, was also brought in to boost the attack.

Mpheni’s dominance at provincial level is not new. They have won Stream A every season since the 2021/22 campaign and have reached the national promotional playoffs twice, including one heartbreaking semi-final exit on penalties. With the second half of the season now underway, belief is growing that this could finally be their year.

Stream B Top Five Standings

While Mpheni command Stream A, Stream B remains tightly contested. The current top five standings are as follows:

1. Ngwaabe City Motors – 14 matches played, 7 wins, 4 draws, 3 losses, 17 goals scored, 5 conceded, goal difference +12, 25 points.

2. Ramatlaohle Mogakwena United – 14 matches played, 6 wins, 6 draws, 2 losses, 16 goals scored, 11 conceded, goal difference +5, 24 points.

3. Makotopong Bahumi – 13 matches played, 6 wins, 4 draws, 3 losses, 19 goals scored, 14 conceded, goal difference +5, 22 points.

4. Royal Pirates – 13 matches played, 6 wins, 2 draws, 5 losses, 20 goals scored, 15 conceded, goal difference +5, 20 points.

5. Mokopane PJ Stars – 14 matches played, 5 wins, 4 draws, 5 losses, 17 goals scored, 19 conceded, goal difference -2, 19 points.

Unlike Stream A, where Mpheni have created a cushion at the summit, Stream B’s race for top spot remains competitive with minimal points separating the leading teams. As the second round intensifies, consistency will be crucial for any side hoping to secure a place in the provincial playoffs.

The mission for Mpheni remains clear, to secure promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship and finally convert provincial dominance into national progression.
