Mpheni Defenders’ bid for promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship has ended in disappointment once again after they were eliminated in the group stages of the National ABC Motsepe League Playoffs in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, with two straight losses.
The Limpopo champions entered the tournament with high expectations following another dominant provincial campaign, marking their third appearance in the national playoffs in the last four years. Six players in the squad also returned from the club’s 2023 and 2024 playoff campaigns, bringing continuity and experience to the group.

Despite that, Mpheni’s campaign unravelled quickly. They opened their Group B fixtures with a 2-0 defeat to the Northern Cape champions, NC Professionals on Tuesday, 2 June 2026, leaving their promotion hopes immediately under pressure. Needing a response in their final group match against KwaZulu-Natal champions Mkhambathi FC, they were again unable to secure the result required to stay in contention, going down 2-0 again.
The back-to-back setbacks confirmed their elimination at the group stage, their second consecutive early exit at this level, having also fallen at the same stage in 2024, and a semi-final defeat in 2023. This latest campaign, however, marks their most painful outing yet, as they depart without a single victory.
For a side that continues to dominate Stream A in Limpopo, winning the stream consistently since 2021/22, their struggles on the national stage persist. Once again, a strong provincial showing has failed to translate into National playoff success for Mpheni.
