Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen has welcomed the arrival of Bafana Bafana international goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, describing the new signing as a major asset to the club while embracing the increased competition for the number one jersey
Speaking during Friday’s pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s pre-season friendly against Zimbabwean champions Scottland FC, Petersen revealed that his relationship with Leaner stretches back to their school days.
I think it’s a good signing for the team. Renaldo is a phenomenal goalkeeper. I’ve known him since we were very young. I was his head boy at high school, and we’ve always had a good relationship,” Petersen said.
The Chiefs skipper praised Leaner’s career journey, highlighting the resilience he has shown since progressing through the Ajax Cape Town academy before fighting his way back into the PSL and earning national team recognition.
It has been great to watch his growth as a goalkeeper. Coming from Ajax as well, I’ve seen how he worked his way back into the PSL to reach the level he’s at today. I think this is a fantastic opportunity for him.”
With Amakhosi now boasting strong competition in the goalkeeping department, Petersen believes the internal battle for places will raise standards across the squad.
As a goalkeeping unit, competition is healthy. I welcome it because it pushes everyone to improve. Whoever gets selected on the day, the important thing is that we’re all ready to perform and help the team succeed.”
Petersen also expressed his excitement about sharing the dressing room with Leaner this season, backing the new arrival to make a significant impact.
These are exciting times. I’m looking forward to working with him throughout the season, and I’m confident he’ll do exceptionally well.”
