Durban City and Stellenbosch FC were forced to settle for a point apiece following a tense 0-0 draw in the Betway Premiership at Chatsworth Stadium.
It was a match defined by strong defensive performances rather than goals, with both sides struggling to find a breakthrough.
Stellenbosch almost handed Durban City an opportunity to open the scoring, but a crucial goal-line clearance from Msimango in the 34th minute kept the scores level. The moment summed up the first half, with both teams pushing forward but neither able to find the finishing touch.
The game became physical early on. Stellenbosch midfielder G. Palace was shown a yellow card in the 16th minute, before Daniels was also booked in the 29th minute.
Durban City goalkeeper Asare played an important role, commanding his area and standing firm against Stellenbosch’s attacking threats. At the other end, Sage Stephens was equally impressive, keeping the Durban City attackers at bay.
In defence, Durban City’s Sanger won several individual duels as his side worked hard to contain Stellenbosch’s attacking play, while captain Siphamandla Ncanana helped organise the backline from the first whistle.
Stellenbosch attempted to change the course of the match with three substitutions in the 61st minute, but the deadlock remained.
In the 77th minute, Sinoxolo Kwayiba forced a brilliant diving save from the goalkeeper as Durban City pushed for a late winner. Despite four minutes of added time, neither side could find the decisive goal.
The match ended in a goalless draw.
The result comes after Stellenbosch suffered a 1-0 defeat to Golden Arrows in their midweek Betway Premiership encounter on 26 August. The draw leaves Stellenbosch in 10th place after five matches, while Durban City remain in the top eight.
