Richards Bay FC delivered a resolute defensive display to hold Mamelodi Sundowns to a 0-0 draw at the uMhlathuze Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

As expected, Sundowns dominated possession for large spells of the encounter, but the Natal Rich Boyz remained compact and disciplined, frustrating the visitors at every turn.

The first meaningful chance of the match arrived in the 16th minute when Khulumani Ndamane rose well inside the box, only to see his header comfortably saved by Richards Bay goalkeeper Ian Otieno.

Sundowns were then forced into an early change in the 23rd minute after Arthur Sales picked up an injury. The Brazilian forward was replaced by Monnapule Saleng as Miguel Cardoso looked to maintain his side’s attacking momentum.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with the Brazilians controlling possession and probing for an opening.

However, Richards Bay’s defensive structure limited Sundowns to speculative efforts from distance, as clear-cut opportunities proved hard to come by.

In search of a breakthrough, Cardoso introduced fresh legs in the closing stages, bringing on Thapelo Morena and Lebogang Mothiba to add attacking momentum.

Despite Sundowns’ dominance, it was Richards Bay who nearly stole the lead late on. Lundi Mhala was denied by a superb last-ditch challenge from Keanu Cupido after finding space in the box.

The hosts came even closer in the 85th minute when a swift counterattack saw Thulani Gumede surge forward before setting up Sanele Barns , whose effort was expertly saved by Ronwen Williams.

Sundowns had one final chance deep into stoppage time, but Peter Shalulile’s low strike drifted inches wide of the post.

In the end, Richards Bay earned a valuable point with a determined performance, while Sundowns were left to settle for a second consecutive league draw after being held to a goalless stalemate on the north coast.
