The 2026 Toyota Challenge is set to deliver its biggest and most exciting edition yet, with an expanded format bringing together top South African provincial sides and emerging international contenders in a unique cross-continental showdown.

The Toyota Cheetahs, Suzuki Griquas and Airlink Pumas will take on touring sides Black Lion, Portugal national rugby union team and Romania A in a revamped tournament kicking off in June.

This year’s competition sees all three visiting nations Georgia, Portugal and Romania already qualified for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, adding significant weight to the tournament as a key preparation platform.

Notably, Georgia and Romania will share a pool with South Africa national rugby union team at the global showpiece.

The opening leg will take place at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein across three matchdays 5, 10 and 14 June featuring a festival-style format with three fixtures per day. The return leg is scheduled for October in Tbilisi, further strengthening international ties.

Mark Alexander, president of SA Rugby, emphasised the importance of the tournament in preparing international teams for the World Cup, while also offering local sides vital exposure against European opposition.

This competition provides Portugal, Georgia and Romania with high-performance preparation as they build towards the Rugby World Cup,” said Alexander.

At the same time, it allows our teams to develop and showcase future Springbok talent.

The tournament, first launched in 2021, continues to grow in stature. According to Rian Oberholzer, CEO of SA Rugby, the inclusion of Griquas and Pumas marks a significant step forward.

Free State Cheetahs CEO Rory Duncan highlighted the festival atmosphere the new format will bring, while Leon Theronof Toyota South Africa Motors reaffirmed the brand’s commitment to growing the game.

With international quality, local pride, and World Cup ambitions all converging, the 2026 Toyota Challenge promises a world-class rugby spectacle and a powerful platform for player development on both sides of the hemisphere.
