University of Limpopo captain Reggy Masebe remains optimistic that his side can go all the way and lift the 2026 Men’s Varsity Football trophy, despite suffering a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Durban University of Technology (DUT) at a packed Oscar Mpetha Stadium on Friday.

UL struggled to convert their chances in front of goal, while DUT made the most of their opportunities to secure a winning start to their campaign.

Masebe admitted that his side’s lack of clinical finishing proved costly but insisted that the defeat would not derail their ambitions of ending UL’s seven-year wait for the Varsity Football title.

We had a lot of chances, but unfortunately, we could not convert them. They had one or two chances, and they managed to convert one,” Masebe told SportsZone.

“Fortunately for them, they got a penalty. So, we couldn’t convert our chances, but what I can say is that it’s not the end of the journey. We still have a long way to go.”

“We will continue fighting. We’re not going to give up. It’s one of those bad days, but we still believe that the trophy is ours. We will continue to fight for it.”

UL head coach Lesetja Laka echoed his captain’s determination, reiterating that winning the tournament remains the team’s primary objective.

Laka believes Friday’s defeat could serve as a much-needed wake-up call for his players as they prepare for their next encounter against Wits.

We are definitely going for gold; that is our primary objective. And in trying to get to your goals, you get, of course, challenges and obstacles,” said Laka.

So, for us, this is one of the challenges and obstacles that we have to overcome. We just have to come back stronger, prepare for the game against Wits, and come out blazing and firing,” he added.
