Sekhukhune United assistant coach Papi Zothwane believes his side has what it takes to challenge for the Carling Knockout title after being drawn against Richards Bay FC in the Round of 16.
Zothwane described the fixture as an exciting but difficult challenge, particularly with Richards Bay having appointed a new coach, Dimitav Pantev. However, he believes playing at home in Polokwane could give Babina Noko an advantage.
It’s an exciting fixture, but it’s also a difficult one, especially playing against a team with a new coach.
However, one advantage we have is that we will be playing at home in Polokwane. Personally, I also know Richards Bay, so we understand the challenge ahead,” Zothwane said.
The former Magesi FC assistant coach, who was part of the team that won the competition in 2024 after defeating Mamelodi Sundowns in the final, believes the knockout format gives Sekhukhune a realistic chance of lifting the trophy.
When you look at this competition, you only need to win three or four matches to reach the final. I experienced what it takes to win this trophy with Magesi FC in 2024, when we defeated Mamelodi Sundowns in the final. I know the feeling of winning it,” he added.
Zothwane said winning the competition is among Sekhukhune’s ambitions this season, adding that the quality within the squad gives them a strong chance of competing for silverware.
It is Sekhukhune United’s ambition to win this trophy, and I believe that, with the squad we have, we can compete and stand a good chance of winning it.”
He also expressed satisfaction with the team’s preparations during the recent FIFA international break but acknowledged the challenge of maintaining consistency while competing in both the league and cup competitions.
I’m happy with the players we have, and we had good preparations during the FIFA break. The tricky part at the moment is maintaining continuity, but we have players who can carry us through both the league and cup competitions,” he concluded.
Sekhukhune United will now turn their attention to Richards Bay as they look to build on their home advantage and take another step towards Carling Knockout glory.
