The countdown to Varsity Football 2026 is heating up, and a series of exciting campus launches is underway to get supporters in tune to back their teams in what promises to be a mouthwatering campaign.
The University of Limpopo hosted its Varsity Football 2026 launch on Thursday, 29 July, at Moshobane Square from 13h00-14h00 as the #Iyachesa spirit comes alive.
Players were ushered to the podium with a long guard of honour led by the University of Limpopo Cheerleaders, followed by students who came out in numbers to greet their heroes who will be donning the famous Blue and white kit with pride.
The women’s team, led by captain Pitsi Ramasenya, has qualified for Varsity for the first time since 2022, while the men’s team, led by Kabelo Masebe, last qualified for Varsity football in 2018, marking a substantial return to campus football.
The occasion also marked the official handover of the teams’ tournament T-shirts, as the players proudly received the kit they will wear while representing the university on the Varsity Football stage.
The South African premier university football competition kicks-off on 1 August, with the women’s tournament to be contested over two bumper weekends from 1-22 August, hosted at the University of Pretoria.
The University of Limpopo women’s team will begin their campaign by taking on Cape Peninsula University of Technology on 1 August at 15h00 at the University of Pretoria Stadium.
In the following weekend, attention will shift to the men’s competition, which kicks off on August 7 and promises to bring exhilarating action until the 2nd of October, where the eventual winners of the Varsity Football will be crowned.
The University of Limpopo men’s team will kick-start their campaign on home turf when they welcome visitors Durban University of Technology at Oscar Mphetha Stadium on 7 August, with Kick-off set for 18h30 PM.
University of Limpopo men’s captain Kabelo Masebe made it clear that his troops will be gunning to claim their first-ever Varsity Football title after last participating in 2018.
“There’s nothing much to expect, except the trophy; we are willing to fight for the fans, for the badge, and compete for the trophy,” Masebe said on Varsity Sports.
“It’s finally that time of the year where varsity football will be playing, so they must believe and hope that we will bring the trophy back to Limpopo.”
The launch was brought to life through vibrant campus activations by Varsity Sport partners Suzuki, Red Bull, SportPesa, and FNB, creating excitement and building anticipation ahead of kick-off.
