Kaizer Chiefs moved to the top of Group D in the CAF Confederation Cup after defeating Al-Masry 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Peter Mokaba Stadium, 8 February 2026.
Kaizer Chiefs made few changes in the starting line up from the Nedbank Cup defeat to Stellenbosch on Wednesday.Glody Lilepo, Zitha Kwinika, Dillan Solomons, Pule Mmodi and Lebohang Maboe were recalled to the Kaizer Chiefs starting line up against Al-Masry.
The Soweto giants had the better share of possession in the opening stages of the first half, while Al Masry appeared more intent on slowing the tempo with time-wasting tactics from the outset actions that did not go unnoticed, as the Egyptians were promptly warned by the referee.
Chiefs’ dominance was eventually rewarded on the half-hour mark when they were handed a lifeline after a penalty was awarded for a handball inside the box. The decision sparked furious protests from the Al Masry players, who surrounded the referee in disbelief. Following a lengthy delay, Flavio da Silva kept his composure and calmly converted, scoring his second penalty of the week.
Al Mastry began to commit bodies forward for the first time in the contest as they searched for an equaliser, but the Amakhosi backline stood firm. Salah came closest for Masry with a close-range header, though his attempt was saved by Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.
Chiefs continued to press before the interval and could have doubled their advantage. Da Silva rounded the goalkeeper but fired into the side-netting with the goal gaping, while Lilepo’s curling free-kick took a deflection and drifted inches wide of the upright.
