Sub-Lieutenant Antonia Maponya of the South African National Defence Force represented Banyana Banyana during the COSAFA Women’s Championship hosted in Polokwane.

The regional tournament, held from 18 February to 1 March, brought together 11 Southern African nations to promote the development of women’s football in the region.
Maponya, who plays club football for the University of the Western Cape, has built an impressive football resume over the years. Her achievements include representing South Africa in the U17 World Cup qualifiers, the U20 All Africa Games, and the U20 World Cup qualifiers. She also earned her first senior national team cap in February 2022.

During the tournament, the SANDF officer showcased her versatility and experience on the field, contributing to Banyana Banyana’s strong campaign. South Africa finished as runners-up, securing a silver medal after losing in the final to the Namibia women’s national football team.

The SANDF praised Sub-Lieutenant Maponya for flying the defence force’s flag high on the regional stage and wished her continued success in her football career.
