FNB Wits reinforced their position at the top of the FNB Varsity Shield standings following Round 5 with a dominant 63–8 victory over FNB Madibaz. In another entertaining, high-scoring encounter, FNB UFH showed remarkable resilience and determination at Suzuki Stadium as they defeated FNB SPU, strengthening their chances of steering clear of relegation.

FNB WSU delivered an impressive first-half display before resisting a determined second-half fightback from FNB CPUT to claim victory in Bellville. Meanwhile, the Caracals’ powerful first-half performance was enough to secure a hard-earned win in a closely contested encounter at Peter Booysen Stadium.

The scorching conditions in Gqeberha on Friday afternoon were matched only by the red-hot form of FNB Wits. Anticipation was high ahead of this top-of-the-table encounter, but just 20 minutes into the first half it became evident that one team had firmly taken control of the contest.

The visitors responded swiftly after Layron Milborrow had handed FNB Madibaz an early advantage with a penalty. Liam Santos sparked the scoring spree, before winger Dustyn Holmes powered down the right flank to score the first of his three tries of the afternoon. The relentless pressure on FNB Madibaz continued to mount, resulting in repeated infringements that saw two of their players sent to the sin bin within a short space of time.

FNB Madibaz found themselves on the back foot and struggled to halt the growing momentum, as Wits flanker Christopher Kachungunu cruised over for his first try. Santos grabbed his second score 12 minutes before halftime, and when prop Meyer Opperman powered over just before the break, the outcome was already looking inevitable. The second half unfolded much like the first, with Wits continuing to dominate proceedings.

Holmes crossed the line for his second try before Wits eventually made their tap-and-go opportunity count. Replacement prop Ricardo Brandao powered his way over for the first of his two tries after the visitors shifted the ball swiftly through the hands. Holmes later completed his hat-trick in spectacular fashion, collecting a clever kick-pass in the in-goal area and showing both strength and awareness to ground the ball successfully.

Kachungunu, winger Lindani Dweba and Brandao all added their names to the scoresheet in the final quarter, putting the finishing touches on what proved to be a dominant and emphatic victory for the FNB Varsity Shield log leaders.
