The South Africa national rugby sevens team showed tremendous resilience as they edged Fiji national rugby sevens team10–7 in a gripping final at the HSBC SVNS New York on Sunday, clinching both the tournament title and the 2026 series championship.

The victory marked a remarkable achievement for the Blitzboks, who secured their fourth tournament win of the seasonand confirmed themselves as the top team in the World Rugby Sevens Series.

South Africa and Fiji entered the final level on log points, but two crucial tries one in each half handed the Blitzboks a 10–0 advantage that ultimately proved decisive.

The opening try came from a moment of brilliance on defence. Impi Visser forced a turnover in a tackle before the ball was swiftly moved through the hands, allowing Gino Cupido to race over after just two minutes. The try was the only score of a tightly contested first half.

Early in the second half, the Blitzboks struck again. Fiji lost possession near their own line and Tristan Leyds capitalised, scoring two minutes after the restart to give South Africa a commanding 10–0 lead with five minutes remaining.

Fiji, renowned for their late comebacks, responded through Terio Veilawa, who scored and converted to cut the deficit to just three points. The closing stages were filled with tension as Fiji launched wave after wave of attack.

With only 30 seconds left on the clock, Fiji looked poised to snatch victory, but a crucial knock-on near the tryline ended their hopes. From the resulting scrum, Fiji conceded a penalty, allowing South Africa to kick the ball into touch and seal a dramatic victory.

Earlier in the day, the Blitzboks booked their place in the final with a hard-fought 14–5 semi-final victory over Argentina national rugby sevens team.

Sebastiaan Jobb opened the scoring in the second minute after South Africa turned defence into attack in the blink of an eye. Argentina pressed hard but were repeatedly denied by the Blitzboks’ resolute defence. With support from Visser and Leyds in the build-up, Jobb’s try was converted by Leyds to make it 7–0.

A spectacular 70-metre run from Selvyn Davids produced South Africa’s second try before halftime, giving them a comfortable 14–0 lead at the break.

Argentina fought back early in the second half when Marcos Moneta finished in the corner two minutes after the restart to reduce the deficit to 14–5. The final minutes were frantic, filled with penalties, turnovers and a disallowed try for the Blitzboks, but South Africa held firm to secure their place in the final.

Having also lifted titles in Cape Town, Perth and Vancouver, the Blitzboks’ triumph in New York capped a dominant season and confirmed their status as the best team in the 2026 SVNS Series.
