FNB UP-Tuks made history by clinching their record sixth Varsity Cup title, overpowering FNB NWU Eagles 31–3 in a dominant final at a Tuks Stadium on Monday night.

The highly anticipated showdown between the top two teams on the log lived up to its billing early on, with both sides locked in a tense and physical battle. Despite playing away from home, FNB NWU Eagles started brightly, adapting well to the wet conditions and applying early pressure on the hosts.

Their persistence paid off in the 18th minute when MJ Mostert calmly slotted a penalty to give the visitors the lead. However, Tuks responded almost immediately, with Divan du Toit leveling matters from the tee.

Momentum soon shifted in favour of the Pretoria side as their powerful forward pack began to dominate. Sustained pressure saw Tuks awarded a penalty try, handing them the lead for the first time. NWU had an opportunity to close the gap just before halftime, but Mostert missed his attempt, leaving Tuks with a 7-point advantage at the break.

The second half told a completely different story, as Tuks took full control of proceedings. Relentless attacking pressure and defensive discipline overwhelmed the Eagles, who struggled to contain the home side.

Andile Myeni ignited the crowd with a stunning solo effort, slicing through the defence for a brilliant try, before Jean Fourie added another to stretch the lead further. Although Du Toit missed both conversions, Tuks remained firmly in control.

The experienced flyhalf made amends with a superb long-range penalty from 50 metres, extending the lead to 22 points. He then added two more penalties to cap off a commanding performance and seal a memorable victory for the Stripe Generation.

The triumph not only secured the 2026 title but also cemented FNB UP-Tuks’ status as one of the most successful teams in Varsity Cup history, underlining their dominance on the university rugby stage.
