Banyana Banyana wrapped up a successful international window with a 2-0 victory over Algeria Women’s National Team at King Zwelithini Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The result saw South Africa complete a clean sweep over the North Africans, following their 1-0 win in the first friendly earlier this week.
It was a much-improved performance from Desiree Ellis’ side, who showed greater attacking intent but were once again frustrated in the first half. Despite creating promising opportunities, Banyana went into the break goalless, with Gabriela Salgado even having a goal ruled out for offside.
The second half, however, told a different story.
Just ten minutes after the restart, Nthabiseng Majiya broke the deadlock with a composed finish after capitalising on a defensive lapse, continuing her impact from the first encounter.
Ellis’ changes at halftime proved effective, as Banyana looked sharper and more purposeful in the final third.
The hosts sealed the result late on when Shakira O’Malley found the back of the net in the closing stages to make it 2-0 and put the game beyond reach.
The match also marked a special milestone for Karabo Dhlamini, who earned her 50th cap for the national team.
With two wins from two, Banyana Banyana will take confidence from the series as they continue preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Attention now shifts to their next challenge ; an international trip to Japan in June for two high-profile friendlies.
