Milford FC secured a historic promotion to the Betway Premiership after holding Magesi FC to a 1-1 draw in their final PSL Promotion/Relegation Play-off match at Seshego Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Knowing that a single point would be enough to seal promotion, Milford started brightly and nearly opened the scoring straight from kick-off after a swift attack into Magesi’s half. The visitors continued to threaten, with Ndlabi firing wide in the seventh minute after being picked out by a brilliant pass from Chili.

Magesi responded strongly and almost took the lead in the 11th minute, but Milford goalkeeper Hleza produced an outstanding save to keep the scores level.

The breakthrough came three minutes later when Edmore Chirambadare rose highest to power home a header and give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Hleza was called into action again shortly afterwards, making another crucial save to keep Milford within touching distance. The visitors thought they had equalised in the 25th minute through Ndlabi, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Magesi nearly doubled their advantage moments later when Chirambadare struck the woodwork.

Milford continued to press forward, creating several opportunities. Bhengu threatened from a long-range free kick, while Ndlabi saw an acrobatic bicycle-kick effort disallowed for a foul. Their best chance of the half arrived in the 36th minute when they were awarded a penalty for a handball inside the box. However, Philander’s effort crashed against the crossbar.

Trailing at the break, Milford introduced Mvelo Zikakayo for Philander as they searched for the goal that would secure promotion.

The visitors emerged with renewed energy in the second half, winning three consecutive corners in the 54th minute but failing to capitalise.

Their persistence paid off in the 59th minute when Chili unleashed a superb strike from the edge of the area to level the score at 1-1.

With promotion and survival on the line, both teams made tactical changes as the match entered its closing stages. Magesi pushed forward in search of a winner, but Hleza remained composed, making another important save in the 87th minute.

Milford successfully weathered late pressure, including a dangerous free kick and four minutes of added time, before the final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations.

The result confirmed Milford FC’s promotion to the Betway Premiership for the first time in the club’s history, while Magesi FC were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Milford also become the fifth club from KwaZulu-Natal to earn a place in South Africa’s top flight.
