Durban City defender Ncanana has clarified his recent comments that “Pirates is just a name” ahead of his side’s MTN8 quarter-final against Orlando Pirates.
The tournament debutants face a daunting challenge against the Buccaneers, but Ncanana insists his remarks were about maintaining a competitive mindset rather than showing any disrespect.
I meant competing. When the referee blows the whistle, it’s no longer about who we are playing; it’s simply 11 versus 11. Whoever wants it more has the chance to eliminate the other team,he said.
Ncanana reiterated his respect for Orlando Pirates but stressed that his focus remains on helping Durban City produce their best performance on the night.
I respect Pirates, of course, but I’m focused on staying grounded. My motivation comes from giving everything I have for the team. And when I’m on the pitch, that’s all I’m thinking about.
Durban City will make their MTN8 debut when they take on Pirates in the quarter-finals, looking to cause one of the biggest upsets of the opening round.
