Bafana Bafana’s historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to a heartbreaking end after a 1-0 stoppage-time defeat to tournament co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32 at Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday.
Stephen Eustáquio struck in the 92nd minute to send Canada into the Round of 16, where they will face either Morocco or the Netherlands.
Despite the painful defeat, South Africa leaves the tournament with pride after making history by reaching the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time, having secured qualification with a 1-0 victory over South Korea in their final Group A match.
Head coach Hugo Broos admitted Canada’s superior physicality and pace proved decisive.
We lost because there was a lack of power and speed compared to our opponents. Modern football is about more than technique; it also requires power and speed, and we still have work to do in those areas,” said Broos.
While disappointed by the result, the Belgian tactician praised his players for their remarkable achievement.
We wanted to win, but reaching the third round would have required a miracle. We don’t have to be too disappointed. What we achieved was good, and I am very proud of this team,” he added.
SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan echoed Broos’ sentiments, saying the team had every reason to hold their heads high despite the defeat.
It is sad that we are bowing out of the World Cup, but we must applaud this team. They made history by reaching the second round for the first time ever, and that is something we will build on when we return home,” said Jordaan.
Although Bafana Bafana’s World Cup journey has ended, their historic run has laid a solid foundation for the future of South African football.
