Bafana Bafana have written a new chapter in South African football history after qualifying for the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time ever following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea at Monterrey Stadium on Thursday Morning.
Needing nothing less than a win to progress, Hugo Broos’ men delivered when it mattered most, with Thapelo Maseko’s 63rd-minute strike proving the difference in a tense Group A encounter.
South Africa’s journey to the knockout stages has been one of resilience. Bafana got off to a difficult start, losing 2-0 to co-hosts Mexico in their opening match before earning a crucial 1-1 draw against Czechia to keep their hopes alive. That left them needing all three points against South Korea, while their opponents only required a draw to advance.
Broos handed World Cup starting debuts to Orlando Pirates duo Relebohile Mofokeng and Evidence Makgopa, while Sphephelo Sithole returned to midfield alongside Thalente Mbatha.
South Korea looked dangerous early on, with Lee Kang-in going close, but Bafana gradually settled into the contest and created chances of their own through Maseko, Mbatha and Makgopa.
The introduction of captain Son Heung-min at halftime was expected to spark the Koreans, but South Africa remained composed and continued to push forward. Their reward came in the 63rd minute when substitute Tshepang Moremi picked out Maseko, who calmly fired into the bottom corner to send the travelling South African supporters into celebration.
With South Korea searching desperately for an equaliser, captain Ronwen Williams produced a vital stoppage-time save to protect Bafana’s lead and secure a historic victory.
The win saw South Africa finish second in Group A on four points behind Mexico, who beat Czechia 3-0 to maintain their perfect record. South Korea finished third after suffering back-to-back defeats following their opening victory over Czechia.
From opening the tournament with defeat to Mexico to making history against South Korea, Bafana Bafana have shown remarkable character and determination.
Their reward is a Round of 32 clash against another co-host nation, Canada, in Los Angeles on Sunday, with a place in the last 16 at stake.
