The Junior Springboks delivered a statement performance at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday evening, overpowering Australia U20 56–17 at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha to secure the 2026 Under-20 Rugby Championship title with a game to spare.

South Africa produced a near-complete performance built on physical dominance, sharp execution and relentless intensity, dismantling the Australians with a clinical second-half surge that underlined their superiority in the competition.

From the outset, the Junior Boks imposed themselves at the breakdown and in contact, setting the tone with aggressive defence and controlled territory. Their structure and patience in attack gradually wore down Australia, who struggled to cope with the tempo and physicality.

By halftime, South Africa had already established control, but it was after the break that they truly shifted gears. The bench made a significant impact, lifting the intensity and maintaining momentum as the Junior Boks cut loose with wave after wave of attacking rugby.

Australia managed moments of resistance, including a late push for points, but were consistently outmuscled and outplayed as South Africa’s cohesion and depth told across the final quarter.

Head coach Kevin Foote praised his side’s evolution and mentality, crediting their growth throughout the tournament.

There was a huge improvement,Foote said. The whole squad showed what it means to play for South Africa. We showed grit and I’m super proud of everyone.
Foote also highlighted the leadership of captain Riley Norton, who helped keep the squad grounded in a high-pressure fixture.
Our preparation was excellent, and the leadership from Riley and the senior guys was really good,he said.

While the Junior Boks’ traditional physical edge remained evident, Foote was pleased with the balance of power and skill shown by his side, who have built strong cohesion over the course of the season.

Our DNA is physicality, but it’s also skill. You see the physicality in the breakdown and how we want to play. This team plays with pride,he added.

With the title now secured ahead of the final round, the Junior Springboks will look to close out their campaign unbeaten, having firmly stamped their authority as the standout side in the U20 Rugby Championship.
