The Fidelity Securedrive Lions claimed the SA Shield for the first time after a gripping round of local United Rugby Championship derbies on Saturday, defeating the Stormers in a dramatic clash in Johannesburg. Meanwhile, the Bulls made a strong statement against the Sharks in Pretoria, as both Gauteng sides strengthened their positions in the top eight.
The Lions stunned the Stormers at Ellis Park, securing a 24-10 victory despite being reduced to 13 men for several minutes in the closing stages. In Pretoria, the Bulls completed a dominant double for the home sides, outclassing the Sharks 41-12 at Loftus Versfeld to seal a convincing bonus-point win.
The result marked a second consecutive home victory for the Lions, who still have four home fixtures remaining, while the Bulls extended their winning streak to three matches. For the Sharks, the defeat ended their hopes of securing the SA Shield after entering the round at the top of the local standings.
In contrast, the Stormers’ early-season dominance has faded. After going unbeaten in their first eight matches, they have now suffered three consecutive defeats and dropped to fifth place on 36 points, trailing log leaders the Glasgow Warriorsby nine points.
The Lions sit seventh with 33 points, just three behind the Stormers, while the Bulls occupy eighth place on 30 points. The Sharks, meanwhile, have slipped to 11th position with 24 points.
Looking ahead, the Lions and Sharks each have six league matches remaining, while the Bulls and Stormers still have seven fixtures to play, including their rescheduled round eight encounter in Pretoria.
