Sphelele Mkhulise scored twice in the final minutes to rescue Mamelodi Sundowns in a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over TS Galaxy, but the match of the night unfolded at Seshego Stadium where Polokwane City and Stellenbosch FC shared six goals in a thrilling 3-3 draw.


Sundowns looked destined for defeat in their opening Betway Premiership match of the 2026/27 season after TS Galaxy took a 2-1 lead in the 77th minute at Mbombela Stadium.


However, Mkhulise came off the bench to score in the 89th minute and again deep into stoppage time, completing a remarkable comeback and ensuring the defending champions opened their league campaign with three points.


Sundowns’ opening fixture against Marumo Gallants, initially scheduled for 1 August 2026, had been postponed to Tuesday, 19 August 2026.


Brayan Leon had given Sundowns an early lead from the penalty spot in the seventh minute after Tashreeq Matthews was fouled inside the area.


Galaxy responded through Victor Letsoalo in the 33rd minute before taking the lead in the 77th minute when Letsoalo’s header eventually resulted in an own goal by Ronwen Williams.


The Rockets appeared on course for a famous victory, but Mkhulise had other ideas. His deflected effort in the 89th minute brought Sundowns level before he completed the turnaround in the 94th minute.


Six-goal thriller in Seshego


While Sundowns produced the night’s biggest comeback, Polokwane City and Stellenbosch FC delivered the most entertaining contest, with six goals shared in a pulsating encounter at Seshego Stadium.


The hosts struck first in the 16th minute when Giovanni Philander put Polokwane City ahead.


Stellenbosch responded seven minutes later as Sinoxolo Kwayiba scored his first goal for the club to level matters at 1-1.


The visitors then completed the turnaround in the 60th minute through Devin Titus, who put Stellenbosch 2-1 ahead.


Polokwane City quickly hit back, with Surprise Manthosi restoring parity in the 66th minute.


The Rise and Shine regained the lead nine minutes later when Raymond Daniels made it 3-2, setting up a dramatic final 15 minutes.

Stellenbosch coach Gavin Hunt turned to his bench, introducing Ashley Du Preez and Bradley Grobler, with Du Preez making his second debut for the club and Grobler making his maiden appearance.


Du Preez made an instant impact, scoring with his first touch in the 80th minute to level the match at 3-3.

Despite further attempts from both sides, neither could find a winner as the points were shared in a six-goal spectacle in Seshego.

Elsewhere on the night, Chippa United drew 1-1 with Richards Bay, while Marumo Gallants and Kruger United played to a goalless draw.
