Orlando Pirates were forced to settle for a point after a 1-1 draw with Siwelele FC. The two sides shared the spoils in a tightly contested encounter.
Heading into the fixture, Pirates had enjoyed success against Siwelele earlier in the season, winning both meetings 1–0, first in the Betway Premiership and then in the Carling Knockout with the decisive goals coming after the 80th minute. However, this time the Buccaneers were unable to replicate that late dominance.
Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine came into the match with 14 clean sheets but saw that record halted in the 29th minute when Vincent Pule found the back of the net to give Siwelele the lead.
From the opening stages of the match, Pirates controlled possession and looked the more progressive side in build-up play, but their struggles in the final third proved costly. Despite creating several promising opportunities, their conversion rate let them down.
One of the early chances fell to Thalente Mbatha in the 21st minute. After intercepting a pass and breaking down Siwelele’s build-up play, Mbatha set himself well before unleashing a powerful shot that narrowly missed the target.
Siwelele’s goalkeeper Ricardo Goss was instrumental in keeping his side ahead for much of the match. Goss produced a number of impressive saves, denying Pirates from set pieces and several dangerous attacking situations.
Pirates eventually found their equaliser in the 52nd minute through Tshepang Moremi, who finished clinically near the post to bring Pirates back into the game. The build-up to the goal showcased Pirates’ attacking quality and brought the score level at 1–1.
The intensity of the match increased significantly in the second half as both sides introduced impact substitutions in search of a winner. Pirates brought on attacking reinforcements, while Siwelele also made tactical changes to maintain their defensive structure and threaten on the counter.
Despite Pirates dominating possession and registering more attempts on goal, they were unable to find a decisive second strike. Goss once again proved vital late in the game, producing another crucial save to deny Moremi a potential brace.
In the closing stages, Pirates continued to push forward, creating pressure in the attacking third, but Siwelele held firm to secure a valuable point.
The results means Orlando Pirates drop crucial points in the title race. The Buccaneers remain at the top of the log with 48 points, but Mamelodi Sundowns sit just one point behind with a game in hand, keeping the pressure firmly on the league leaders.
