A sold-out uMhlathuze Stadium played host to a four goal thriller as Richards Bay and Orlando Pirates had to settle for a stalemate in a hard- fought 2-2 draw on Friday night’s Betway Premiership encounter.

The hosts made a bright start and stunned the visitors as early as the ninth minute. Thulani Gumede produced a moment of quality with a first-time volley from outside the box that flew into the top corner, leaving Sipho Chaine with no chance.

Orlando Pirates responded by pushing numbers forward in search of an equaliser. Thalente Mbatha came close with a powerful long-range effort, but Ian Otieno produced a fine save to keep Richards Bay in front.

The Natal Rich Boys continued to threaten and nearly doubled their lead around the half-hour mark when Moses Mthembu tested Chaine from a tight angle, but the goalkeeper managed to parry the effort. At the other end, Yanela Mbuthuma came close with a glancing header, only to be denied by Otieno as the hosts went into the break with their advantage intact.

Pirates came out with intent in the second half and were rewarded five minutes after the restart. Oswin Appollis found space in the box and finished from a delivery by Relebohile Mofokeng to bring the visitors level.

Richards Bay, however, responded well and regained the lead ten minutes later. Lindokuhle Zikhali struck from distance, with his effort finding the bottom corner to restore the hosts’ advantage.

The Buccaneers continued to push and introduced Andre de Jong in the second half as they searched for another goal. They applied sustained pressure and won a series of corner-kicks, but Richards Bay remained disciplined at the back for large periods.

Pirates’ persistence eventually paid off in the closing stages. Lebone Seema found the equaliser with a long-range strike, ensuring the visitors walked away with a point.

In the end, it was a competitive and tightly contested encounter, with both sides showing resilience in front of a sold-out crowd in Richards Bay.
