Rassie Erasmus has unveiled a formidable Springboks line-up to face Australia in Saturday’s Castle Lager Rugby Championship opener at Ellis Park. The 23-man squad features 18 World Cup winners, with Eben Etzebeth set to extend his record as South Africa’s most-capped player with his 134th Test. Captain Siya Kolisi will break new ground by starting at No 8 for the first time in his Test career.

The backline sees Aphelele Fassi at fullback, with Edwill van der Merwe and Kurt-Lee Arendse providing pace on the wings. Jesse Kriel and André Esterhuizen form a powerful midfield combination, while Manie Libbok and Grant Williams take charge at flyhalf and scrumhalf. Erasmus has opted for speed and attacking flair in the back three, coupled with physicality in midfield.

In the pack, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Marco van Staden join Kolisi in the loose trio, promising high work rate and breakdown intensity. Etzebeth partners Lood de Jager in the engine room, while Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx and Wilco Louw will anchor the scrum. Erasmus has emphasised the importance of dominance up front, knowing the Ellis Park set-piece battle will be key.
The bench blends muscle with versatility, featuring Bongi Mbonambi, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Franco Mostert and Kwagga Smith among the forwards. Cobus Reinach, Canan Moodie and Damian Willemse offer cover across multiple backline positions, giving Erasmus options to adapt as the game unfolds.
With the Wallabies eager to upset the defending champions on South African soil, Saturday’s clash promises to set the tone for the tournament. Erasmus says the selection reflects a balance between tested experience and fresh energy, as the Boks aim to begin their title defence with a statement performance at one of their most iconic fortresses.
The match kicks off at 17:10 on Saturday, 16 August, at Johannesburg’s Emirates Airline Park (Ellis Park). It will be broadcast live on SuperSport, with a capacity crowd expected to create a charged atmosphere for the first Rugby Championship Test of the season.
