SA Rugby and Vodacom have taken their nearly three-decade relationship to new heights with a landmark sponsorship agreement that makes Vodacom the first and exclusive official telecommunications partner for all national teams and competitions.
The deal, announced on Thursday, builds on a partnership that began in 1995 and already includes Vodacom’s title sponsorship of the United Rugby Championship. The new agreement now stretches across every level of the sport — from grassroots to the Springboks, men’s and women’s rugby, sevens and 15s, as well as junior and development structures. It also covers the Carling Currie Cup, the SA Cup, and a forthcoming Women’s Super League.
“We are incredibly proud to deepen our long-standing partnership with Vodacom, a brand that has been a true supporter of South African rugby for three decades,” said SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer. “Their expanded commitment is not only a vote of confidence in SA Rugby, but also a powerful endorsement of the direction we are heading. Their investment enables us to continue growing the game at every level – from grassroots to the global stage.”
Vodacom’s presence in South African rugby has spanned multiple eras, from the days of Vodacom Super Rugby to the URC, where local teams have reached every Grand Final since joining the competition four seasons ago. Now, with this expanded role, Vodacom aims to enhance fan engagement, create new experiences, and further develop the women’s game.
Sitho Mdlalose, CEO of Vodacom South Africa, said: “This comprehensive partnership means fans now get even closer to the action – whether it’s watching the Springboks, celebrating rising stars, or enjoying extraordinary fan experiences. Rugby unites South Africans, and we’re proud to be at the heart of that connection.”
