Mamelodi Sundowns climbed back to the top of the Betway Premiership standings after securing a 3–1 win over Marumo Gallants in a match that tested their efficiency despite their dominance. Coming into the encounter, Sundowns sat second on the log and made five changes to their starting XI, while Gallants, positioned 14th, were aiming to upset the in-form hosts.
Sundowns asserted control early, dominating possession and dictating the tempo within the opening 15 minutes. Their attacking intent was clear as they pushed forward relentlessly, but a lack of clinical finishing and well-organised defending from Gallants kept the scoreline intact. By the 25th minute, Sundowns had managed just one shot on target despite their territorial advantage, while Gallants remained resolute at the back, consistently breaking down Sundowns’ build-up play in the final third.
The breakthrough eventually came in the 31st minute through an unfortunate own goal by Ntiya-Ntiya, who turned a Marcelo Allende set piece into his own net to give Sundowns a deserved lead. The home side nearly doubled their advantage a minute later when Brian Leon tested Washington Arubi, but the Gallants goalkeeper produced an excellent save, one of several crucial interventions that kept his side in contention.
Gallants found their way back into the match in the 40th minute after Nuno Santos handled the ball in the box. Ndlondlo stepped up and confidently converted the penalty, sending Ronwen Williams the wrong way to level matters at 1–1. The equaliser injected belief into Gallants, as they kept knocking only to be denied by Williams. Despite Sundowns’ overwhelming superiority in possession (78%), completed passes (259 to 55), and shots on target (five to two), the sides went into halftime level, echoing the 1–1 scoreline from their previous league meeting, which had also featured an own goal from Gallants.
Sundowns resumed with renewed urgency, continuing to press and create chances, though Gallants remained disciplined defensively. Matthews came close in the 53rd minute but fired just wide, as Sundowns searched for a decisive second goal. Tactical changes followed, with the hosts making substitutions to inject fresh energy into their attack, a move that soon proved effective.
In the 62nd minute, Teboho Mokoena restored Sundowns’ lead with a composed finish after being set up by Sales, giving the hosts a 2–1 advantage. Gallants had a clear opportunity to respond but failed to convert, missing a chance that could have drawn them level once again. Sundowns responded by tightening their structure, introducing defensive reinforcements to protect their lead while maintaining control of possession.
As the match progressed, the intensity remained high, with Gallants earning a free kick in a dangerous area in the 70th minute, but they were unable to capitalise. Both sides made further changes, with Sundowns introducing captain Themba Zwane and Gallants bringing on fresh legs in a final push for an equaliser. Despite their persistence and late pressure, Gallants were unable to break through a disciplined Sundowns defence.
Deep into stoppage time, Mokoena put the result beyond doubt, completing his brace in the 93rd minute to seal a 3–1 victory and secure all three points for Sundowns. The win extended their impressive run to eight consecutive league victories and saw them reclaim top spot in the standings.
Gallants’ coach Mathiane reflected on the result, admitting that missed opportunities proved costly:
“When you play against a team like Mamelodi Sundowns, you have to make use of every chance you get, or you will get punished,” he said, acknowledging that his side ultimately paid the price for their mistakes.
Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso also offered an honest assessment of his team’s performance, stating:
“Technically, it was not our best game. I was not happy with the first half, but it was a good fight in the second half. We need to stay true to ourselves and not go into a dimension we cannot control,” emphasising the importance of sticking to their playing philosophy.
Despite ending on the losing side, Washington Arubi delivered a standout performance and was named Man of the Match after repeatedly denying Sundowns with crucial saves.
