The University of Johannesburg (UJ) kicked off their 2026 Varsity campaign with a 1-0 Victory over Tshwane University of Technology at UJ Soweto Stadium on Friday Evening.

In front of a passionate Orange Army, UJ produced a disciplined and determined performance to secure all three points in their opening fixture.

The decisive moment came from the penalty spot, with Moraka Mathidza keeping his composure to fire home a powerful spot-kick and give the hosts the lead. The strike not only proved to be the match-winner but also earned Mathidza the SportPesa Goal Rush Award.

TUT pushed for an equaliser, but UJ remained organised at the back and worked tirelessly to protect their advantage. The hosts limited TUT’s opportunities and showed composure to see out the narrow victory.

UJ captain Yasidu Lifa was instrumental in the defensive effort, delivering a rock-solid performance and leading from the back as his side maintained their clean sheet. His display earned him the FNB Player of the Match award and cheque, powered by FNB eWallet.
