Bafana Bafana are finally heading back to the FIFA World Cup, 15 years after hosting it on home soil in 2010.
South Africa sealed qualification with a 3–0 win over Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday night, a result that capped off a dramatic campaign filled with setbacks and redemption.
Goals from Thalente Mbatha, Oswin Appollis, and Evidence Makgopa sent the stadium into celebration, as fans chanted “We’re going to America!”
Coach Hugo Broos’ men finished top of Group C, overcoming a mid-campaign points deduction that had threatened to derail their hopes.
“I know not everyone agreed with my choices, but for me it’s about having players with quality, the right mentality, and the discipline to follow instructions. Building a team takes a plan, you stick to it because you know it’s the right way. That’s what we’ve done over the past three years, and now the results show. People once said Bafana Bafana were a joke, today, we’ve earned respect, and the whole nation can be proud,” said Bafana Bafana Head Coach Hugo Broos.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in Africa, Nigeria crushed Benin 4–0 but narrowly missed out on automatic qualification. They’ll head to the CAF playoffs alongside Cameroon, Gabon, and DR Congo, who will battle for the final African slot at the 2026 World Cup.

For South Africa, it’s more than just qualification, it’s redemption. The nation that once hosted arguably the world’s biggest tournament is back among football’s elite.
