The Amakhosi and Buccaneers’s journey through the CAF competitions has been one of mixed emotions so far. Both sides successfully navigated the first preliminary round, but the challenges have intensified as they stepped into the next stage of the continental battles.
Kaizer Chiefs, after edging past their first-round opponents, have shown glimpses of improvement under their new technical team. Their goalless draw away to AS Simba in the DRC leaves the tie finely balanced heading into the return leg at home. Chiefs will be counting on their passionate supporters and home advantage at FNB Stadium to push them through to the next round.
Orlando Pirates, on the other hand, cruised past their first-round opponents with relative ease, displaying their attacking strength. However, their 3–0 loss to FC St Eloi Lupopo in the DRC came as a shock, especially given their previous dominance. The Buccaneers now face a huge task in the return leg at Orlando Stadium, where they must overturn the deficit to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch FC, who entered the continental stage in the second preliminary round, are both in contrasting positions. Sundowns are all but through after a commanding 5–1 win in Nigeria, against Remo Stars while Stellenbosch will need to make the most of their home fixture after their goalless away draw against 15 de Agosto de Akonibe.
As the decisive second legs approach, the stage is set for an intense weekend of football. South African fans will be hoping their teams rise to the occasion and ensure a strong Mzansi presence in both CAF competitions this season.
Can all four South African sides progress? The next weekend will give us the answers.
