Lamontville Golden Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs played to a goalless draw at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with both sides creating chances but failing to find the breakthrough.
The fixture was moved from King Zwelithini Stadium to Mbombela Stadium amid reported safety concerns surrounding the original venue.
Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Leaner was called into action as early as the eighth minute, pulling off a save to keep Arrows from taking the lead.
Golden Arrows continued to threaten, with Dion missing a one-on-one opportunity in the 20th minute as Abafana Besthende looked to make their chances count.
Chiefs were handed a golden opportunity in the 30th minute when they were awarded a penalty following a foul inside the box.
Maboe stepped up from the spot, but Thakasani Mbanjwa produced an important save to deny Chiefs and keep the score level.
The visitors continued to look for an opening, but Leaner was again called upon in the 38th minute, making a save from a header to ensure Chiefs went into the break without conceding.
Chiefs made their first changes in the 59th minute, with Mtasingwa and Shabalala introduced as they searched for a way through the Arrows defence.
The second half remained an open contest, with both teams struggling to find the finishing touch.
Mmodi came close for Arrows in the 75th minute when his header flashed across the face of goal, while Vilakazi missed an opportunity for Chiefs three minutes later.
The chances continued late into the match. Thokozani had a major one-on-one opportunity in the 90th minute but could not convert, while Ntando Mabaso tried his luck from range shortly afterwards, only to see his effort miss the target.
Neither side could find the decisive goal as the final whistle confirmed a 0-0 draw, with Mbanjwa’s penalty save and both teams’ missed chances proving decisive in a match where the opportunities were there, but the finishing was not.
