South Africa took a significant step toward qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a convincing 3-0 victory over Lesotho in Bloemfontein on Friday night, September 5.
While the on-field performance was impressive, much of the drama unfolded off the pitch leading up to the match. Controversy surrounded the selection of midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who, according to FIFA rules, should have served a suspension after accumulating two yellow cards in previous matches. The Lesotho Football Association warned South Africa not to field Mokoena, threatening to lodge a protest if he played.
However, Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos stood firm and included Mokoena in the starting XI. The decision paid off as South Africa cruised to a comfortable win, technically an away fixture, but played on home soil.
Youngster Mohau Nkota opened the scoring in the first half, continuing his push to secure a regular spot in the national team. Lyle Foster added a second in the second half, showing his class and physical presence up front. Oswin Appollis sealed the result with a well-taken third goal.
It wasn’t just the goalscorers who shone. Sensational 19-year-old Mbekezeli Mbokazi impressed in only his second cap, displaying maturity beyond his years. He formed a solid defensive line alongside veteran goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and Khulumani Ndamane.
In midfield, Sipho Mbule, Thalente Mbatha, and the controversial Mokoena controlled the tempo with ease, dictating play and breaking up Lesotho’s rhythm throughout the game.
Looking ahead, South Africa now faces a crucial clash against Nigeria on Tuesday, September 9. Although Nigeria presents a formidable challenge, Bafana Bafana will take confidence from their recent performance and home-ground advantage as they aim to continue their strong start to the qualifiers.
