The 2026 Telkom Netball League burst into life with a compelling opening day of action at Power Week 1, delivering a mix of dominant displays, dramatic finishes and a headline clash that lived up to expectations at Durban University of Technology .

The match of the day saw defending Division 1 champions the Fireballs pushed to their limits by a resilient Kingdom Stars outfit before grinding out a hard-fought 43–38 victory.

Backed by a passionate home crowd, the Stars matched the intensity of the champions from the first whistle, refusing to be overawed by the occasion. However, the Fireballs’ experience told in key moments, allowing them to edge ahead and take a 25–20 lead into halftime.

The third quarter produced a spirited response from the Kingdom Stars, who steadily chipped away at the deficit. Their defensive pressure unsettled the Fireballs, and at one stage the gap was reduced to just three goals, setting up a tense final period with the score at 35–32.

A physical and fiercely contested fourth quarter followed, with both sides battling for control. Tarle Mathe delivered an energetic all-court performance, but crucial turnovers at decisive moments ultimately cost the Stars. The Fireballs capitalised on those errors, showing composure in the closing stages to secure the win and begin their title defence on a positive note.

Despite ending on the losing side, Kingdom Stars defender Thulisile Maduna was named Player of the Match for an outstanding display that underlined her side’s competitiveness.

Earlier in the day, the Malawi Under-21 side continued to impress with a composed 53–44 victory over the Kingdom Queens in a lively Division 2 encounter. After trailing 25–22 at halftime, the Queens rallied to level matters at 35–35 heading into the final quarter. However, the Malawian side held their nerve down the stretch, with goal attack Florence Jeke earning Player of the Match honours for her influential performance.

One of the most dramatic moments of the day came in the clash between the Comets and Baobabs. The Comets appeared in control after establishing a 32–22 halftime lead, but the Baobabs mounted a remarkable comeback to briefly edge ahead in the closing stages. In a stunning finish, the Comets converted a Telkom Supershot at the death to snatch a 55–53 victory, with Bronwyn Goosen named Player of the Match.

The Crinums delivered the most dominant performance of the opening day, dismantling the Aloes 97–40 in a one-sided Division 1 contest. Establishing control early, the Crinums led 19–8 after the first quarter and never looked back. Proteas defender Karla Pretorius anchored a formidable defensive effort to claim Player of the Match honours.

In the morning session, the Tornados set the tone with a commanding 72–27 win over the Lilies, while the Diamonds edged Tshukudu 45–43 in a tightly contested affair. The Sunbirds also impressed, defeating Sonoblomo 55–47, making effective use of the Telkom Supershot to maintain their advantage.

With a blend of high-quality netball, competitive intensity and late drama, Day 1 set an early benchmark for the tournament. Attention now turns to Day 2, where teams will look to build momentum in what is shaping up to be a fiercely contested Telkom Netball League season.
