Netball South Africa has taken a significant stride towards the professionalisation of the sport by expanding its pool of contracted national players, announcing a group of 17 athletes alongside seven training partners.
The move marks a notable increase from the previous financial year, where only 10 players were contracted, underlining a growing commitment to building a sustainable high-performance system and providing athletes with greater support at elite level.
The newly introduced 12-month contracts, effective from 1 April 2026, are designed to strengthen the national team pipeline, improve player welfare, and enhance South Africa’s competitiveness on the international stage. While financial details remain undisclosed, the organisation confirmed that remuneration will be structured according to experience, number of international caps, and each player’s role within the national setup.
President Mami Diale described the expansion as a deliberate and strategic step in the sport’s long-term growth.
“We are very intentional about professionalising netball in South Africa. We recognise that this is a journey that requires time, investment, and consistency but this moment represents meaningful progress,” said Diale.
She emphasised that the increase in contracted players was performance-driven, aimed at rewarding form while creating more opportunities within the national system.
“This marks the beginning of a new era for netball in South Africa, one where players are increasingly supported to pursue the sport at the highest level,” she added.
Chief Executive Officer Adam Brooke highlighted that the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to elevate the sport both commercially and competitively.
“By investing in our athletes and creating a structured, performance-driven environment, we are laying the foundation for sustained success both locally and internationally,” Brooke said.
With key global competitions on the horizon, including the next Netball World Cup cycle, the expanded squad is expected to provide much-needed depth, continuity, and flexibility within the national team structure.
All contracted players will operate under performance-based agreements, with movement between the main squad and training partners determined by form, fitness, and team requirements throughout the season.

The 17 contracted players include a blend of experienced internationals and emerging talent, reflecting a balanced approach to squad development. Meanwhile, the seven training partners will remain closely integrated within the system, ensuring readiness and competition for places.
The CEO is set to hold individual consultations with each contracted player to outline specific terms, expectations, and performance objectives a move aimed at reinforcing accountability and professionalism within the setup.
As Netball South Africa continues its transformation journey, this latest development signals a clear intent to create a viable professional pathway for players and position the national team for sustained success on the global stage.
