A cloudy Saturday afternoon at Orlando Stadium saw Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns play to a 1–1 draw in the first leg of their MTN 8 semifinal clash.
The match was a game of two halves. Mamelodi Sundowns dominated the first period with confident possession and composed build-up play, while Orlando Pirates responded with renewed intensity in the second half, energised by a passionate home crowd that created an electrifying atmosphere.
Sundowns asserted themselves early, looking comfortable on the ball and clearly showing they hadn’t come to sit back. Their dominance paid off when Teboho Mokoena found the back of the net from a set piece, giving the visitors a 1–0 lead at halftime.
The second half began with Sundowns continuing to control possession. Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine was called into action multiple times, making crucial saves to keep his side in the game.
Despite being under pressure, the Buccaneers refused to back down. In the final 10 minutes, they began to find rhythm and momentum. Mbokazi played a key role, delivering a perfectly timed assist to Sebelebele, who scored his first goal in Orlando Pirates colours in what was just his third appearance for the club.
Following the equaliser, Pirates pushed for a winner, with Ronwen Williams making several important saves to preserve the draw for Sundowns.

After the match, Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso shared his thoughts:
“We know that Orlando Pirates like to start matches very strong, so it was important for us to do the same. I think we managed the first half very well.”
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou acknowledged the team’s slow start but asked for patience from the fans:
“At the moment, the results are not matching the performances, but I just ask our fans to be patient. I know it’s not the right word at big clubs, but I hope they will be patient with us.”
The tie remains finely balanced heading into the second leg, with everything still to play for as both sides look to secure a place in the MTN 8 final.
