Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns played out a fiercely contested draw at Loftus Versfield Stadium on Wednesday night.

Amakhosi struck first midway through the opening half when a long ball from Ronwen Williams was intercepted. Mduduzi Shabalala reacted quickly, showing neat footwork before setting up Flavio Silva, who kept his composure to finish past Williams.

Sundowns were forced into an early change after just 15 minutes when Keanu Cupido was stretchered off following a heavy challenge by Siphesihle Ndlovu. The incident left head coach Miguel Cardoso visibly frustrated on the touchline, prompting Grant Kekana to enter the fray.

Chiefs doubled their advantage against the run of play when Shabalala once again intercepted a loose ball from Williams and released Silva, who calmly slotted home via the post.

However, Amakhosi suffered a setback of their own before halftime as Shabalala was stretchered off following a lunging tackle by Jayden Adams, with Gaston Sirino coming on against his former club.

Masandawana responded ten minutes into the second half when Iqraam Rayners finished from close range after meeting a dangerous cross from Thapelo Morena.

The match took another twist when Sundowns were reduced to ten men midway through the second period, as Adams received his second yellow card and was sent off.

Speaking post match , the coach emphasised that his players are not just competing they are consistently delivering at a high level in the Betway Premiership.

I think some of our players deserve a chance. They are coming to compete for the league .In one of the press conferences Sekhukhune players were chosen because they were in third position and Kaizer Chiefs is in third position .The performance and consistency is there what do they have to do to become part of the Bafana Bafana squad?he said.

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has previously made it clear that selection is based not only on club form, but also on tactical fit, consistency over time, and the ability to perform under pressure at international level.

The contest grew increasingly physical, with both sides engaged in relentless midfield battles and strong challenges throughout.

After the match, Cardoso raised serious concerns about officiating standards, referencing the recent Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

Let’s reflect on what happened again in the match between Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. We saw two broken shoulders, it turned into a fight, and that’s where the referee has a responsibility to take control.

This is not the kind of football we want to see, nor how it should be officiated. Referees must come prepared, do their homework, and understand the nature of the match they are stepping into.

They need to control the game properly. Right now, we have players in hospital with serious injuries broken shoulders, a broken arm.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Sundowns nearly snatched victory in stoppage time, but Brandon Petersenproduced a superb save to deny Rayners’ powerful header, ensuring the points were shared.
