Durban City and Stellenbosch FC played out a tense 0-0 draw at Chatsworth Stadium on Friday night in a closely contested encounter.

The fixture marked Durban City’s first home game since returning from the Nedbank Cup final, with the club showcasing their trophy to supporters before kick-off. Trevor Mokwena and goalkeeper Asare Fredrick were included in the starting lineup for the hosts.

The game changed in the 54th minute when Stellenbosch defender Mthetheleli Mthiyane was sent off after receiving a second yellow card following a foul on Thabo Nodada.

Despite being reduced to ten men, Stellenbosch continued to threaten going forward, with Asare producing a superb save in the 62nd minute to deny substitute Langelihle Phili.

The visitors came close again through Devin Titus and Tsegofatso Mabasa, but failed to find the breakthrough, while Durban City also had a late chance to win it after Letsie missed a one-on-one opportunity in the dying minutes.

Both sides ultimately settled for a point each after a physical and disciplined performance at Chatsworth Stadium.

After the match, Durban City coach Pitso Dladla praised his defenders.

“We have top centre backs who are actually deserving of a national team call up,” said Dladla.

Gavin Hunt also applauded his side’s effort despite the red card.

“We did well, a great effort especially for a team with a man down.”
