The highly anticipated clash between Bafana Bafana and the Super Eagles ended in a 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening in Bloemfontein.
With World Cup qualification on the line, both teams came into the match under pressure. South Africa sat at the top of the group with 16 points, while Nigeria were in third place with 10 points making it a must-win for the visitors.
The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, setting the perfect tone for a high-intensity encounter. From the first whistle, the game was played at a frantic pace, with both teams committing to aggressive challenges and several fouls.
The opening goal came when Mohau Nkota delivered a dangerous cross from the right, putting Nigeria’s defense under pressure. In an unfortunate moment, defender William Troost-Ekong turned the ball into his own net, giving South Africa a 1-0 lead. Nkota was applauded by his teammates for creating the chance.
Just before halftime, in the 44th minute, Nigeria responded. Calvin Bassey rose highest and headed in the equaliser. However, the goal sparked controversy, as replays appeared to show the ball brushing his hand before crossing the line. Despite protests from the South African players and the bench, the referee allowed the goal to stand.
One of the standout performers on the night was 19-year-old Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who delivered a commanding display in midfield and was deservedly named Man of the Match. South Africa head coach Hugo Broos couldn’t hide his admiration.
“Look at a guy like Mbokazi, this guy has to go to Europe. He’s only 19 years old,”
Broos said, expressing his belief in the rising star’s future.
With the draw, South Africa remains at the top of the group and now needs just one more win to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a promising position as the qualifiers near their end.
