Banyana Banyana took the lead just before halftime through Nonhlanhla Mthandi. However, Ghana equalized in the 68th minute when Alice Kusi’s shot deflected off Andile Dlamini into the South African net. While Kusi celebrated the goal, it was officially recorded as an own goal by CAF.

With the score level at 1–1 after extra time, the match went to a penalty shootout to determine the winner of the third-place playoff.

Linda Motlhalo, Bambanani Mbane, and Jermaine Seoposenwe converted their penalties for South Africa, while Sibulele Holweni and Hildah Magaia were denied. Ghana scored through Alice Kusi, Josephine Bonsu, Jennifer Cudjoe, and Nancy Amoh. Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah’s effort was saved by South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini.

Despite their brave effort, South Africa just missed out on a bronze medal and will return home on Monday, July 28th.
